2.1 PROCESS DEFINITION At Mina-Al-Ahmadi refinery, Atmospheric Residue Desulphurization units are one of the most important secondary processing units. Mina-Al-Ahmadi refinery consists of four ARD units. Two ARD units(Unit-41 Unit-42) are located in RMP area and two units(Unit-81& Unit-82) are located in FUP area. The ARD units are designed to process atmospheric residue from the crude distillation units CDU-4(Unit-40) and CDU-5(Unit-80). CDU-3(Unit-3) residue can not be processed in ARD as there is no desalter provided to treat CDU crude feed. The RMP ARD units contain two reactor sections 42) and a(Unit-41 and Unit common fractionation section which forms a part of Unit-41. Similarly, FUP ARDS units contains two reactor sections(Unit-81 and Unit 82) and a common fractionation section which forms a part of Unit-81 The feed to the ARD unit undergoes various reactions such as Hydrodesulphurization Hydrodematallization Hydrodenitrification Hydro- cracking, Hydrogenation etc and various products such as Hydrodesulfurised Fuel Oil, Gas Oil, Wild Naphtha, Sour LPG etc are obtained from the units. The ARD units in RMP and FUP consist of two reactor systems for conversion of feed to the products. The products from the reactor sections are separated in common fractionator section as below:
